Work Programme The underlying philosophy of the SAFER EURORO TN necessitates a unique coordination scheme involving both vertical (Thematic Areas, TAs) coordination as well as Integrative Horizontal Function (IHF) coordination, giving rise to 9 coordinating functions as described below. Each thematic area is in itself self-standing, addressing one distinct risk area with key bearing upon ship safety and the design process and comprising three distinct levels:
The fundamental objective of the vertical co-ordination function is to ensure effective links and a dynamic interplay between the above three elements. GL leads Thematic Area 1, which deals with Design for Structural Safety. WS Atkins leads Thematic Area 2 (Design for Survivability), with the participation of MARTEC. Thematic Area 3 (Design for Passenger Survival) is led by TNO, with BMT also participating. SIREHNA is coordinating Thematic Area 4 (Design for Seaworthiness), input also provided by CETENA. Finally, coordination of Thematic Area 5 (Design for Fire Safety) is provided by RINA and Fincantieri. The coordination of tasks at each one of the levels referred to above describes the clustered (horizontal) coordinating functions, i.e.
The first IHF is coordinated by SSRC owing to their leadership in safety performance prediction tools, assisted by Chantiers De L' Altantique. The second IHF is coordinated by DNV, a classification society, with leading experience on risk-based safety assessment methodologies, assisted by FORCE Technology. Finally, the third IHF is coordinated by NTUA-SDL, a leading ship design laboratory with considerable experience and expertise in general and knowledge-based ship design with support from Deltamarin, the largest and most experienced passenger/Ro-Ro design office in the world and Color Line Marine. The fundamental objective of the horizontal coordination functions is to ensure effective links between the thematic areas to facilitate integration. There is thus an additional horizontal coordination function referring to the administrative coordination of the whole TN which describes financial, managerial, event organisation and coordination, dissemination, training and technology transfer activities.
