The Ship Stability Research Centre is the world-leading centre on Ship Safety. Established on 22 January 1997 in response to demand from the international maritime industry to adopt scientific approaches in dealing with ship safety, SSRC today comprises 45 researchers and staff from 18 countries, including a number of world-renowned experts, dealing with wide-ranging aspects of motion dynamics and control, stability, safety and design of ships and advanced marine vehicles. SSRC has had a profound influence on the maritime industry, establishing itself as the acknowledged pace setter on ship safety in all its various forms ranging from philosophical to research, regulatory, design and operational aspects. The SSRC is a member of the ITTC Specialist Committee on Ship Stability (Chair 1996-2002), the Chair of the International Standing Committee on Ship Stability Conferences and Workshops and supports actively the UK delegation at IMO for Ship Stability and Safety of Fishing Vessels, High Speed Craft, Bulk Carriers and Large Passenger Ships.

The Ship Design Laboratory of the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering was established in 1989. Its work addresses the development of new design concepts and design methodologies, as well as of relevant computer-aided tools for the design, hydrodynamic analysis and operational performance and safety assessment of ships and marine structures in general. NTUA-SDL has a long-standing proven record of national and international collaborative research with the European maritime and shipbuilding industry, other universities, research establishments and governmental authorities. It is technical adviser of the Union of Greek Shipowners for Passenger Shipping and the Greek Chamber of Shipping.

Registro Italiano Navale was established in 1861 as an independent, non-profit organisation. It is one of the oldest International Classification Societies setting standards for the design, construction, testing and periodical surveys of merchant ships flying any flag. RINA is a founder member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) and of the European Association of Classification Societies (EurACS) and is included in the "Classification Clause" by the Institute of London Underwriters. Besides offering a wide range of services to owners, shipyards and industries, RINA is delegated to act as technical body of the Italian Maritime Administration and, in this capacity, RINA's personnel was appointed chairman of the IMO's working group on Formal Safety Assessment.

TNO, founded in 1932, is the principal Netherlands organisation for applied scientific research. TNO is a non-governmental organisation, it has a good relationship with various universities in the Netherlands and abroad. The organisation is active in a broad range of research topics, varying from nutrition to space travel. The Centre for Mechanical Engineering (CMC), part of the TNO Institute Building and Construction Research, has a long term experience in vibration, crashworthiness and shock research related to ships. The Centre employs a staff of 15 scientists and 16 engineers and is well equipped with modern multi-channel measurement equipment and software in the field of finite element computations, data acquisition and signal processing. Moreover it has its own laboratory with, among others, shakers, transducer calibration facilities, shock test rigs and a drop tower. Vibration actuators and measuring equipment can also be used in situ, outside the laboratory. CMC has a long term experience in carrying out measurements on large and heavy objects.

WEGEMT

WEGEMT is a not-for-profit European Association of 42 Universities in 18 countries. It was formed in 1978 with the aim of increasing the knowledge base, and updating and extending the skills and competence of practicing engineers and postgraduate students working at an advanced level in all aspects of marine technology and related sciences. At present, the Associates are drawn from universities in Europe, including Scandinavia, the former Eastern Europe and the CIS. They have in common, a capability, expertise and experience to teach and carry out research in marine technology and related sciences and an active interest in collectively delivering initiatives that support marine industries. WEGEMT supports, encourages and participates in programmes of Research and Technological Development (RTD), Education and Training (E&T), and Information Exchange and Dissemination where they relate to marine sector activities.
