International Bodies and Committees

Work at the IMO-SLF and MSC committee by various members of SAFER EURORO II on the Harmonisation of Existing Stability Rules and on Bulkcarriers Safety is being continued and is contributing massively to regulatory framework changes. The IMO-SLF-SDS committee on the Harmonisation of Existing Stability Rules was held in July 2002 and September 2003 (London) and continues its work through an International Correspondence Group (2003-2004).

Work at ITTC's Specialist Committee on Extreme Motions and Capsizing (whose 5 out of 10 members are partners of SAFER EURORO II) is being also continued.

Meetings

The Kick-off meeting SAFER-EURORO II was held on 4-5 March 2002, in London. A Management Steering Committee meeting followed on September 17-18, 2002, London. The third meeting was held on January 30, 2003, Delft and the fourth was after the IMDC03, on May 9, 2003, in Athens.
Meanwhile, each of the monitored projects holds meetings on a regular basis, with the most recent ones being the VRSHIPS-ROPAX 2000 meeting held on November 6-7, 2003 at NTUA, Athens and the Safety at Speed meeting held on November 13-14 at ABS Europe, London.
The next SAFER EURORO II Steering Committee Meeting is planned for January 29-30, 2004, during SAFER EURORO II Midterm Workshop, to be hosted by Fincantieri at Trieste.

Workshops

Three workshops have fully successfully been organised so far, namely:

  • SAFER EURORO II Workshop, September 17-18, 2002, London;
  • SAFER-EURORO II Workshop, January 30, 2003, Delft;
  • SAFER-EURORO II Workshop, May 9, 2003, Athens.

The workshops aroused much interest in the TN activities and furthered a safety culture in the maritime profession by enhancing the safety level of ships and reducing the time and resources spent in the design phase. deriving from the unprecedented R&D effort invested on safety through this Thematic Network on "Design for Safety".

The next SAFER EURORO II Workshop (Midterm Workshop) is planned for January 29-30, 2004, to be hosted by Fincantieri at Trieste.
